Και η μεγάλη στιγμή έφτασε – ανακοινώθηκαν οι υποψηφιότητες για τα βραβεία της Αμερικάνικης Ακαδημίας Κινηματογράφου, μπαίνοντας έτσι στην τελική ευθεία της κούρσας των βραβείων. Στη λίστα των υποψηφιοτήτων κυριαρχεί η ταινία του Alejandro González Iñárritu, The Revenant, με 12 υποψηφιότητες, ανάμεσα στις οποίες είναι και των Καλύτερης Ταινίας, Καλύτερης Σκηνοθεσίας, αλλά και η αναμενόμενη υποψηφιότητα του Leonardo DiCaprio που ίσως του εξασφαλίσει το πρώτο Oscar της καριέρας του.
Στη συνέχεια, ακολουθεί η μετα-αποκαλυπτική ταινία Mad Max: Fury Road, η οποία εξασφάλισε 10 υποψηφιότητες, συμπεριλαμβανομένων αυτών τις Καλύτερης Ταινίας και Καλύτερης Σκηνοθεσίας για τη δουλειά του George Miller.
